The Windy City is warming up and Chicagoans are spilling out of their homes to enjoy the outdoors this summer. Many of Chicago's most treasured activities are picnic-friendly, which means foodies and wine-lovers go all out when they go outside. Whether for movies in Grant Park, classical music in Millennium Park, concerts at Ravinia Park or boating on Lake Michigan, picnic-goers are looking for a solution to the inconvenience of lugging a bulky cooler full of ice in order to keep wine cold. A husband and wife team of entrepreneurs from Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood experienced this frustration themselves, which led to the creation of ChillinJoyTM, a convenient and effective portable wine chilling solution. The first of its kind, ChillinJoy uses a system of neoprene technology and removable ice packs to quickly chill a room-temperature bottle of wine to the optimal drinking temperature and keep it chilled for hours. Chris and Christin Poterek spend their summers enjoying outdoor concerts, movies in city parks and at the beach. Year-round, they love the pursuit of the next hottest BYO restaurant. An air traffic controller (Chris) and a public relations specialist (Christin) by trade, the Potereks searched for a solution to the inconvenience required to enjoy a chilled bottle of wine outdoors.
"We were tired of lugging a cooler full of ice in addition to lawn chairs and picnic baskets, or leaving home with a bottle of wine in an a simple insulating sleeve only to discover it was no longer cold when we were ready to drink it," said Chris, president of Chilled Portable Products. "We looked online and in stores for something that could chill wine quickly and was easy to carry, but we couldn't find anything. So, we experimented with our own ideas."
At the time, the Potereks were training for the Chicago Triathlon, spending many mornings swimming in chilly Lake Michigan. They considered the remarkable insulating abilities of their wet suits. But, they needed more than a product to keep wine cool. They needed something that would actually chill a warm bottle of wine and keep it cold for hours; something convenient to carry across town, whether on the train or on foot.
One night, the Potereks took two ice packs (recently acquired by Chris after a bike wreck) from the freezer and stuffed them inside a wet suit. Then, they inserted a room-temperature bottle of wine and secured it inside the wet suit with the ice packs over night. The next morning, the bottle of wine was still cold, and that was the birth of ChillinJoy.
Chicagoans can be sure that whether spreading a fancy picnic in Millennium Park, catching the train to Ravinia or setting sail on Lake Michigan, wine will be chilled and ready to enjoy with ChillinJoy.
